Angels

What Are 'Angels?'
Angels are created beings of Light, spiritual Messengers and intermediaries between the Divine and humanity across various religious and cultural traditions. They play a vital role in the spiritual hierarchy, delivering Divine Messages, executing God's Divine Judgement and Will, and embodying virtues such as Kindness, and Strength. In major world religions angels are depicted in diverse forms, from Archangels like Michael and Gabriel to individual guardian angels. They are believed by many to signify purity and transcendence, with specific duties such as guiding souls and recording human deeds. Beyond their roles as protectors and messengers ( by the permission of their Creator), angels serve as embodiments of divine attributes, inspiring human behaviour and spiritual aspirations, while their ethereal beauty and significance are celebrated in art, literature, and folklore, symbolising hope and the potential for divine intervention in human lives.
Why are 'Angels' Important?
The significance of angels extends beyond their roles as messengers; they hold profound importance in the spiritual lives of many individuals and communities. For believers, angels represent a tangible connection to The Divine, providing reassurance that they are not alone in their struggles. This belief can help us to feel a sense of comfort and security, especially in challenging times, as individuals may feel that they have a guardian watching over them, guiding their steps and protecting them from harm.
Angels can serve as symbols of hope and inspiration, reminding people of the possibility of Divine grace and the presence of goodness in the world. Their stories often illustrate themes of redemption, mercy, and the triumph of Light over darkness, encouraging individuals to aspire toward higher moral and ethical standards.
The study of angels in theological discourse can lead to deeper understanding and appreciation of the divine mysteries, encouraging believers to explore their faith more profoundly.
The importance of angels lies in their ability to inspire, help, protect, and guide humanity ( by the permission of The Creator), serving as a spiritual bridge between the earthly and the divine. Whether as protectors, messengers, or symbols of hope, angels continue to hold a significant place in the hearts and minds of people around the world, transcending cultural and religious boundaries.
How can our belief in 'Angels' help us?
Belief in Angels serves as a profound source of inspiration and guidance, allowing us to draw meaningful comparisons between the concept of perfection embodied by these celestial beings and the often flawed nature of human existence.
Angels are often depicted as beings of pure light and virtue, representing ideals such as love, wisdom, and strength. This juxtaposition invites us to reflect on our own imperfections and shortcomings, encouraging a journey of self-improvement and growth. By recognising the qualities that Angels represent, we can aspire to use our free will to willingly CHOOSE to cultivate similar virtues of inner peace and light even in the darkest of places, fostering a deep sense of purpose and direction in our lives.
The belief in Angels empowers us to truly appreciate the significance of free will, a gift that sets humanity apart in the grand tapestry of creation. With this understanding, we are reminded that our choices carry weight and that we have the capacity to learn and embody compassion and mercy. Each decision we make can either lead us closer to or further away from our spiritual essence. By embracing the teachings often associated with Angels—such as kindness, forgiveness, and selflessness—we can navigate our lives with a greater sense of intention. This conscious effort to align our actions with these higher ideals not only enriches our own lives but also positively impacts those around us, creating ripples of kindness in our communities.
Belief in Angels provides us with a unique avenue to connect with the Divine attributes of our Creator. Angels, often viewed as 'emanations of Light' from the very essence of the Divine, serve as spiritual guides that bridge the gap between humanity and the sacred. This connection especially when we strive to embody these Attributes of our Creator allows us to experience a sense of belonging and unity with the greater cosmos. When we contemplate the qualities of Angels—such as their unwavering support, guidance, and protection—we can draw nearer to our Creator, feeling a profound sense of gratitude and connection that nurtures our spiritual well-being. This connection can be particularly comforting during times of uncertainty or distress, as the presence of Angels can remind us that we are never truly alone and that divine assistance is always within reach.
In essence, the belief in Angels is not merely a comforting notion but a transformative force that encourages us to strive for higher ideals, embrace our free will with responsibility, and foster a deep connection with the Divine. By integrating these beliefs into our daily lives, we can embark on a journey toward Inner Peace, guided by the light of Angels illuminating our path and reminding us of our inherent potential to reflect the beauty and grace of the Divine in all that we do.
How can our 'belief in 'Angels' cause us harm?
While the belief in angels can provide comfort, it may also result in several detrimental effects, including:
1. Dependency on Angels
Individuals may become overly reliant on angels for solutions, adopting a passive approach to challenges and neglecting their own responsibilities.
2. Disappointment in Adversity
Expecting constant angelic support can lead to feelings of disappointment and abandonment during difficult times.
3. Overlooking Practical Solutions
A preoccupation with angels may cause individuals to ignore practical solutions and neglect their personal and mental health needs.
4. Misinterpretation of Events
People might misinterpret coincidences as messages from angels, leading to poor decision-making that adversely affects their lives.
5. Stigmatization of Mental Health
Belief in angels can perpetuate stigma around mental health issues, as individuals may view their struggles as a lack of faith rather than a legitimate need for professional assistance.
Potential Dangers of Elevating Angels Above the Divine
Worshiping angels as 'gods' or placing them as idols alongside our Creator can distort spiritual priorities and goes against the first two Commandments. This misplacement of reverence risks undermining our faith foundation. When angels are viewed as intermediaries with greater influence than God who creates/created them, it detracts from the omnipresence and omnipotence of the Divine.
Feelings of Unworthiness
Believing in angels as intermediaries can create a sense of unworthiness in connecting directly with God. This reliance fosters self-doubt, leading individuals to feel disconnected from the Divine. Instead of recognising their inherent worthiness of God's love, they may believe they must go through angels to access the Divine, hindering their spiritual growth.
Risk of Idol Worship
Turning to angels for guidance rather than praying directly to God for help and guidance can lead to idol worship. This shift in focus may dilute one's faith and weaken the profound connection with the Creator, as individuals may attribute blessings to angels rather than acknowledging them as gifts from God. Ultimately, this can result in a fragmented spiritual experience, obscuring the unity and love available through a direct relationship with the Divine.
How does our belief in 'Angels' affect our well-being?
The belief in angels has historically influenced individuals across various cultures and religions, impacting their well-being in multiple dimensions.
Physical Well-Being
The belief in angels can positively affect physical health by providing comfort and a sense of protection, which may reduce stress and anxiety. This reduction can lead to benefits such as lower blood pressure and improved immune function. Additionally, the belief may encourage healthier lifestyle choices, motivated by the desire to honour the divine.
Emotional Well-Being
Emotionally, belief in angels can offer solace during challenging times, enhancing resilience and coping abilities. This belief fosters hope, love, and positivity, essential for emotional stability. Practices like prayer or meditation focused on angels can promote mindfulness and help individuals process their emotions constructively.
Spiritual Well-Being
Spiritually, believing in angels can deepen one's connection to the divine, providing a sense of purpose and meaning. It encourages exploration of spirituality through practices like meditation and community worship, enhancing spiritual beliefs and fostering kindness and compassion.
Psychological Well-Being
Psychologically, the belief in angels can improve mental health by alleviating feelings of isolation and despair. The idea of a protective presence can provide comfort and a framework for understanding challenges. Positive affirmations associated with angelic beliefs can lead to a more optimistic outlook, while engaging with angelic themes can serve as a therapeutic outlet for personal growth.
How does our belief in 'Angels' affect our relationships?
Belief in angels serves as a profound source of comfort and inspiration, allowing individuals to feel a deeper connection to the 'unseen' realms of existence. This belief fosters an understanding that there is not only a 'Higher Self' within each of us but also a Higher Purpose guiding our lives. When this belief is shared among individuals within their relationships, it creates a nurturing environment where each person is encouraged to strive towards becoming the best version of themselves. This striving often manifests as an aspiration to embody the virtuous qualities typically associated with angels, such as love, kindness, compassion, and righteousness. Such attributes not only enhance personal growth but also enrich the relational dynamics, as partners uplift and motivate each other in their journeys of self-improvement.
The act of remembering and holding onto our belief in God, alongside the understanding that angels are manifestations of the divine light emanating from our Creator Force, brings an increased sense of illumination into our relationships. This is particularly vital during challenging times—those moments of distress, hardship, and loss—when the weight of the world can feel overwhelming. In these dark times, the belief in angels can serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles. It encourages individuals to seek solace in the idea that they are supported by divine beings who are believed to guide and protect them. This perspective can foster resilience and solidarity within relationships, as partners find strength in their shared beliefs and support one another through adversity.
Belief in angels serves as a poignant reminder that this life is transient and that our earthly experiences are but a stepping stone towards a greater spiritual journey. This awareness can help individuals remain steadfast against the myriad worldly temptations that often pull us away from our true spiritual essence. Instead of succumbing to the desires of the physical body, believers are encouraged to connect more deeply with their spiritual selves and nurture their souls in preparation for the Hereafter. This spiritual focus can significantly enhance relationships by inspiring individuals to choose a path of kindness, compassion, patience, and selflessness. When individuals prioritise serving others over seeking selfish gains, it creates a ripple effect of positivity and love, fostering healthier and more fulfilling connections.
So the belief in angels not only enriches our personal lives but also profoundly influences the way we interact with others. It encourages a culture of support, understanding, and shared values, allowing relationships to flourish in an environment where love and mutual respect are paramount. By embracing these beliefs, individuals can cultivate deeper, more meaningful connections that transcend the superficial aspects of human interaction, ultimately leading to a more harmonious existence both individually and collectively.
What does Abrahamic Scripture teach about 'Angels?'
Jewish Scripture, particularly the Hebrew Bible, presents angels as significant spiritual beings created by God to serve various roles within the divine order. The term for angel in Hebrew is "malakh," which translates to "messenger." This indicates their primary function as intermediaries between God and humanity. Throughout the Tanakh, angels are depicted in various contexts, often appearing to convey God's messages, provide guidance, or execute divine will. For example, in the Book of Genesis, angels visit Abraham to announce the birth of Isaac and later to warn Lot of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
In the Book of Daniel, angels play crucial roles in delivering prophetic visions and interpretations, emphasising their importance in the unfolding of God's plan. The presence of angels in Jewish thought also reflects a broader cosmological understanding, where they inhabit a hierarchy of celestial beings, each with specific duties and attributes. The Talmud and later rabbinic literature further elaborate on the nature of angels, discussing their characteristics, the number of angels, and their interactions with humans, thus enriching the Jewish understanding of these divine messengers.
In the teachings of Christ, as recorded in the New Testament, angels are acknowledged as significant entities within the spiritual realm, fulfilling roles that align with God's purposes. Jesus refers to angels multiple times, illustrating their function as guardians and messengers. For instance, in the Gospel of Matthew, Christ speaks of angels in the context of children, stating that their angels always behold the face of the Father in heaven, highlighting the protective and watchful nature of angels over the innocent.
During pivotal moments in His life, such as after His temptation in the wilderness and during His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, angels are depicted as providing comfort and strength, reinforcing their role as divine helpers. Christ also teaches about the final judgment, where angels will play a part in separating the righteous from the wicked, illustrating their involvement in eschatological events. The teachings of Christ, therefore, not only affirm the existence of angels but also emphasise their active participation in the spiritual and moral dimensions of human life, serving as reminders of God's presence and care throughout the journey of faith.
The Quran provides an in-depth perspective on angels, underscoring their vital importance within the Islamic faith. It states that angels are created from light and are completely submissive to God's commands, lacking free will and existing solely to fulfill His will.
Angels have various responsibilities, including:
-
Recording human actions
-
Delivering revelations to prophets
-
Managing the natural order of the universe
Among the angels, the Archangel Gabriel (Jibril) is particularly significant, as he is tasked with conveying God's messages to the prophets, including the revelations received by Muhammad.
The Quran also outlines the roles of angels in the afterlife, where they take the souls of the deceased and question them in their graves. This highlights their essential function in an individual's spiritual journey.
Belief in angels constitutes one of the six articles of faith in Islam, emphasising the necessity of acknowledging their existence and roles. Through these teachings, the Quran offers a profound understanding of angels as servants of God and active participants in the divine plan, serving as a bridge between the earthly and celestial realms.
The Quran recounts a dialogue between God and the angels during the creation of man, in which God instructed the angels to prostrate before humanity. This signifies that the ideal human being holds a status 'higher than angels.' However, the Quran also warns that individuals can fall to the lowest of all creatures if they choose to disobey God after gaining knowledge.
How can we feel more connected to our Angels?
Practical Steps
Experiencing our oneness with the Angels of God is a profound spiritual journey that invites us to deepen our connection with the divine realm. Here are several practical steps that can guide us along this path, allowing us to cultivate a closer relationship with these celestial beings.
1. Mindfulness and meditation
One of the most effective ways to connect with the Angels of God is through meditation. Set aside time each day to enter a state of stillness, which can open the channels of communication between you and the angelic realm. Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably. Focus on your breath, allowing each inhale and exhale to bring you deeper into a tranquil state. As you meditate, invite the presence of the angels by visualising a warm, radiant light surrounding you, symbolising their love and protection ( by the permission of The Creator).
2. Engaging in Prayer
Prayer is a powerful tool for experiencing oneness with the angels. Speak from your heart, expressing your desires, fears, and gratitude. This act of communication creates a sacred dialogue that can attract the attention of angelic beings. Consider using specific prayers or affirmations that resonate with your spiritual intentions, reinforcing your openness to receive their support and wisdom.
3. Creating an Angelic Space
To deepen your connection with angels, consider creating an angelic space that promotes tranquility and spiritual awareness. This can be achieved by spending time in nature or designing a serene environment at home.
-Nature as a Source of Inspiration
Engaging with nature, such as walking or sitting outdoors, allows you to appreciate the beauty of the natural world, which can elevate your spirit and open your heart to the divine presence of angels. The natural sounds and sights serve as reminders of the divine energy surrounding us.
-Creating a Tranquil Home Environment
At home, you can invite angelic energies by incorporating elements that resonate with your spiritual beliefs, such as angel symbols, images, or statues. These can act as focal points for meditation and reflection, helping you connect with the angelic realm.
-The Role of Music and Rituals
Music, particularly soft melodies or spiritual chants, can enhance the atmosphere of your angelic space, promoting peace and facilitating connection with angels. Lighting candles can also create a warm ambiance and symbolize your intention to invite angels into your life.
-Enhancing the Sensory Experience
Incorporating incense or essential oils can further enhance your angelic space. Scents like lavender, frankincense, or sandalwood can uplift your spirit and create a calming atmosphere, fostering a deeper relationship with the angels.
-4. Practicing Gratitude
Gratitude aligns us with higher vibrations, making it easier to connect with the angels. Take time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life, no matter how small. Keeping a gratitude journal is beneficial; write down what you are thankful for and acknowledge the assistance you have received from the angelic realm. This practice elevates your spirit and opens your heart to receive more of their guidance and support.
-5. Listening for Guidance from within
The angels communicate in subtle ways through feelings, thoughts, or signs in your daily life. Cultivate the habit of listening and pay attention to your intuition and the synchronicities that occur around you while seeking Help and Guidance from your Creator. Trust your Creator, liwten to your instincts and be open to receiving messages in various forms, whether through dreams, visions, or unexpected encounters.
6. Practicing Acts of Kindness
Engaging in acts of kindness and compassion aligns your energy with that of the angels. When you serve others, you embody the qualities that angels represent—love, compassion, and selflessness. Volunteer your time, lend a helping hand, or simply offer a smile to someone in need. These actions uplift those around you and create a ripple effect that attracts more angelic energy into your life.
7. Studying Angelic Wisdom
Educating yourself about angels and their roles can enhance your understanding and connection with them. Read books, attend workshops, or explore online resources that delve into angelic teachings and experiences. This knowledge deepens your appreciation for their presence and helps you recognize the signs they send your way.
-8. Setting Intentions
Setting clear intentions for your spiritual journey helps you focus your energy and attract the support of the angels. Reflect on what you wish to achieve in your connection with them. Write down your intentions and revisit them regularly to reinforce your commitment. Intentions act as a guiding light, directing the energy of your desires toward the realization of your spiritual goals.
By incorporating these practical steps into your daily life, you can foster a deeper sense of oneness with the Angels of God. This journey is not just about seeking guidance but also about embracing the love and support that these celestial beings offer. He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous.' She said, 'My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?' He said, 'Such is God; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.' And He will teach him writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel. And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed, I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I design for you from clay [something] like the form of a bird; then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by permission of God. And I heal the blind and the leper and I bring the dead to life by permission of God. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed, in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.'"
Quran Surah Al-Imran 80- "It is not for a believer, man or woman, when God and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any choice in their affair. And whoever disobeys God and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error."

And God made it not except as a good tidings and to reassure your hearts. And victory is not except from God, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.'
Quran Surah An-Nisa: 136- O you who have believed, believe in God and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down to His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in God, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.

Quran Surah Al-An'am: 8-10-m And they say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Indeed, God is able to send down a sign, but most of them do not know." Quran Surah Al-An'am: 50- Say, "I do not say to you that I have the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say to you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"
Quran Surah Al-An'am: 93- And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God or says, "It has been revealed to me," while nothing has been revealed to him? Quran Surah Hud: 69-83- And certainly did the messengers come to Abraham with good tidings. They said, "Peace." He answered, "And peace, you are a people unknown." Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.
And he placed it near them; he saw that their hands did not reach for it. He felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not." And they gave him good tidings of a learned boy. And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!" They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing." And when the fear had departed from Abraham and the good tidings had come to him, he began to argue with Us about the people of Lot. Indeed, Abraham was forbearing, grieving and [frequently] returning [to God]. [God] said, "O Abraham, cease; indeed, the command of your Lord has come, and indeed, there will reach them a punishment that cannot be repelled." And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them a burden. He said, "This is a day of great distress." And his people came hastily to him. And before this, they had been doing evil deeds. He said, "O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear God and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?" They said, "You know that we have no claim on your daughters, and indeed, you know what we want." He said, "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support!" They said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; never will they reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back, except your wife. Indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is the morning. Is not the morning near?" So when Our command came, We made the highest part of the city its lowest and rained upon them stones of baked clay.Indeed, in that are signs for those who discern.
